Dr Joanna Stanwell Dermatology Surgery GP transparent

Background

Dr Stanwell graduated from Cambridge University Medical School in 2005, where she achieved a first class honours in her physiology preclinical degree and distinctions in both medicine and surgery.

She initially completed paediatric surgical training in the South of England and worked as a Consultant Surgeon in London for several years, but her career path changed following major surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy for bowel cancer (thankfully curative).

Moving to North Yorkshire to be closer to her family, she retrained as a general practitioner in Harrogate from 2020 to 2023, including eighteen months under the tutelage of experienced GP trainers holding the diploma of practical dermatology. She is a member of the Primary Care Dermatology Society and has completed additional training in dermoscopy.

Specialism

Dr Stanwell now works across Harrogate and Nidderdale as a GP with a special interest in Dermatology and Minor Surgery. She is an approved GP trainer for Health Education England as well as a FSRH certified coil and implant fitter.

Dr Stanwell's areas of clinical interest include:

  • Women and Children's Health
  • Minor Surgery and Training

At Skin Surgery Clinic she carries out skin cancer screening in the form of mole checks and full body mole mapping, and offers laser and surgical removal of moles and other skin lesions.
