Rhinophyma Treatment
Rhinophyma is a condition which presents as a swollen, bulbous nose. It can progress over time and produce uneven, oily skin that’s often red in colour. The swelling occurs because there is formation of scar-like tissue and the sebaceous glands (which produce oil on the skin) get bigger.
The development of rhinophyma is often linked with rosacea. However, many patients who present with a red, bumpy nose don’t suffer from significant visible rosacea.
Rhinophyma occurs mainly in fair skinned men aged 50 to 70 years.
Rhinophyma treatment at Skin Surgery Clinic is carried out by laser surgery with one of our Consultant Plastic Surgeons. Excess tissue is removed and the nose is restored to a natural shape and texture.

Who carries out this procedure
What causes rhinophyma?
It’s not known exactly what causes rhinophyma, but there are a number of factors that can contribute:
- long-term sun exposure
- family history of rosacea
- fair skin
- emotional stress
- wind exposure
- light coloured hair
Is rhinophyma permanent?
If left untreated, rhinophyma tends to worsen over time. The skin continues to thicken and sebaceous glands continue to produce excess oil. This progression can be gradual or more rapid depending on the patient.
This condition can cause problems over a long period of time for patients because it can be difficult to treat effectively.
Rhinophyma treatment – what are my options?
We offer laser treatment for rhinophyma at our clinics. A Consultant Plastic Surgeon will use a Class 4 Medical Grade Laser to reshape the nose, remove the oily tissue and resurface the skin’s texture.
After treatment a full programme of protective aftercare will be discussed so that your skin can recover from the procedure as quickly as possible.
Is every patient suitable for this treatment?
We may advise against treatment if you:
- Have had complications from previous treatment (including undesirable changes to the colour of thickness of your skin).
- Have a skin condition or blood/immune disorder that would inhibit healing.
- Have a history of scarring (keloid or hypertrophic scars).
- Currently use the medication Roaccutane/Isotretinoin (for acne) or have used it within the last year.
- Have any active skin infections.
The rhinophyma consultation
As the laser rhinophyma surgery needs to be carefully discussed and planned, we do not offer an Online Consultation service for rhinophyma patients.
At your consultation, your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will examine your nose and discuss your condition with you. They will take a history of how your rhinophyma has changed over time, and discuss your expectations after treatment.
After your Surgeon has approved you for the rhinophyma laser treatment, you will be booked in for the procedure which will take place in one of the Minor Operations Suites in our clinics.

Before and After
Rhinophyma Treatment by Laser

"My nose was becoming lumpy around the nostrils and I was conscious it was getting worse.
The day of the procedure I was quite apprehensive but knew I was in good hands.
Recovery was quite easy, I stayed in the house mostly for the first 9 days just treating myself to a couple of drives around my area just to have a break from watching tv.
I feel happier about my appearance and the fact I can't see any of my old bumps when I'm reading or looking at my phone. I would say just follow the advice on aftercare and yes it does look alarming the first day or two but the speed of recovery is very good and you notice improvements every day.
I would highly recommend to anyone who is thinking about getting this procedure done. You will not be disappointed."

"I decided to contact the Skin Surgery Clinic because I was having problems socialising with the condition I had. So I did some searching online and found some promising results from the Skin Surgery Clinic in Leeds. After an exchange of emails containing photographs, it was decided a face to face consultation would be the best option.
On the day of consultation with Mr David Watt, I was put at ease that something could be done. All the effects the treatment could cause, post-op care and the time for healing were explained.
Day of procedure, I was more excited about what results I had to look forward to than being worried about the procedure I was to be having done. Nothing hurt me, injections or the laser treatment, and it all only took an hour.
Ten days post procedure: I was well on the way to fully healing. I kept up the regime of cleaning with the medical-grade water and applying the ointment which was supplied, along with medical wipes.
I cannot thank the team at Skin Surgery Clinic enough. I would recommend anyone to not suffer and get a consultation as soon as possible."
