Otoplasty / Pinnaplasty Surgery in Newcastle
Having ears that are prominent or uneven can cause loss of confidence and self esteem and so some people feel that the shape of their ears has a negative effect on their life.
Surgery can help your self-confidence by improving the position, size and shape of your ears. The aim of the procedure is to mould the ears back towards the head in a natural shape, and position them in place using internal stitches.
The otoplasty procedure to correct prominent ears is carried out by one of our Consultant Plastic Surgeons, Mr Sainsbury, who is an expert in advanced facial reconstructive surgery techniques.
We are delighted to be able to offer this treatment with no waiting list to patients in our clinic in Gateshead Team Valley, easily accessible from Newcastle, Sunderland, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Blyth, Consett, Chester-le-Street, South Shields and North Shields.
Is Prominent Ear Correction Surgery right for me?
We offer prominent ear correction through the Otoplasty procedure (also known as a Pinnaplasty procedure or Ear Reshaping Surgery).
This is a treatment carried out under local anaesthetic and lasting around 45 minutes per ear. It takes place in one of our hospital-grade Minor Ops Suites, which have advanced air filtration and positive pressure ventilation to offer the lowest possible infection risk to our patients.
This page aims to answer your questions about treatment, but our surgical nursing team are always available to discuss your condition and the procedure before you book your consultation with Mr Sainsbury.

Who carries out this procedure?
What are prominent ears and what causes them?
Around 2% of the population describe their ears as prominent. It is often caused where the cartilage of the ear is missing some of the usual folds that give it its familiar shape. It's not clear what causes this; the lack of folds can run in families or just be present in an individual with no family history.
What are my treatment options?
The way that we can correct prominent ears is by doing a minor operation. The procedure is intended to improve the appearance of your ears, having discussed your desired results with your surgeon.
The operation has a very high success rate. BAPRAS, the national body of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, reports that 90-95% of patients are happy with their final results.
Your surgeon, Mr David Sainsbury, is a specialist in reconstructive facial surgery.
What happens during the consultation?
Mr Sainsbury will examine your ears and discuss your hopes for treatment. You will talk about the reshaping he may be able to achieve through the surgery, and explain more about what happens on the day of the procedure.
Lastly, you will discuss the healing process and aftercare steps you will take at home to get the best possible outcome from your treatment.
What happens during ear reshaping surgery (otoplasty/pinnaplasty)?
We will perform the procedure under local anaesthetic. This is a pain numbing medicine that is injected into the skin using a small needle into the back of your ears. You will be awake during the operation.
When your ears are numb the surgeon makes a small cut behind each ear. This exposes the thick tissue (cartilage) inside the ear. The surgeon then reshapes, folds or removes some of the cartilage to make your ears lie closer to the head.
Finally, the surgeon will put stitches at the back of the ears to hold them in their new position. A dressing is then applied to protect the ears.
The procedure takes around 1.5-2 hours for both ears.
What happens after the surgery?
You will wear the dressing for 5-7 days and keep the area dry before we see you again in the clinic to review your healing.
You can return to normal daily activities as soon as you feel comfortable. Patients often prefer to return to work after the dressing has been removed.
We will give you a soft headband to wear at night for three months after surgery. This is to protect the ears.
We recommend you avoid contact sports and rough play for three months after treatment, and avoid swimming, saunas and steam rooms for six months.
Will I have a scar?
The procedure leaves a small curved scar behind each ear. These are not obtrusive and will fade with time.
How long do the otoplasty results last?
The procedure is permament and generally not reversible - you will not need 'top up' treatments.
Do you offer ear reshaping surgery for under 18s?
We are able to offer otoplasty surgery to patients over the age of 12.
During our consultation appointment we will discuss the affected ears and your hopes for surgery in order to ensure that a patient is suitable for treatment.
