Patients suffering from a painful and facially disfiguring condition called rhinophyma can have their appearance transformed with a simple laser procedure. Mr Jay Wiper (Consultant Plastic Surgeon) carries out this procedure from our award-winning Guiseley clinic at a cost of £1400.
One of our patients tells his story of suffering with this distressing condition for many years…
“Anyone who suffers with rhinophyma will be familiar with the lack of self-confidence as a result of having a bloated, red and sore nose as the centre piece of ones face. In my case I suffered with the condition for over 20 years with continuous bleeding and painful pustules.
During the procedure, the bloated area of my nose was burnt away with the laser by Mr Wiper – the procedure was straightforward and less painful than expected. Within a few days the area scabbed and although it looked uncomfortable, it didn’t hurt and within 14 days the scabbed area fell away leaving a ‘a proper’ nose. I cannot describe the surprise and joy of seeing my nose as it was 20 or so years ago. The rhinophyma had grown so slowly and steadily that I had forgotten what I, and my nose used to look like.”

What is Rhinophyma?
Rhinophyma is a condition which presents as a swollen, bulbous nose. It can progress over time and produce uneven, oily skin that’s often red in colour. The swelling occurs because there is formation of scar-like tissue and the sebaceous glands (which produce oil on the skin) get bigger.
Seen mainly in fair skinned men, aged between 50 and 70, the development of rhinophyma is commonly believed to be due to alcohol, however, there is no proven link between rhinophyma and excessive drinking. Nor is the condition strongly exclusively linked with rosacea, as it is often associated.
More often than not, the topical treatments such as creams and gels, as well as antibiotics given by GPs do little to improve the condition and after years struggling with the condition, many patients seek surgical procedures to remove the excess tissue. Unfortunately traditional methods of surgically shaving the excess tissue will cause heavy bleeding and have an increased risk of scarring.
Mr Wiper uses the class 4 medical grade C02RE laser to vaporise the diseased tissue. Because it cauterizes the skin as it goes, the procedure is cleaner and has a significantly reduced risk of scarring. Mr Wiper reshapes the nose, removing the oily tissue, restoring its natural shape. The images above show a patient after just one laser treatment.
“Knowing Rhinophyma as I do (have done), I would wholeheartedly recommend that any sufferer to have this procedure carried out. There really is no reason to suffer any longer than necessary.”
Before & After Photos
Laser Treatment for Rhinophyma is offered at our award-winning Guiseley clinic. Treatment costs £1400 and will significantly restore the shape of the nose. As this condition is usually life-long, it may return over the following years and further treatment may be necessary.
